CA Recall: Who's running against Newsom?

Since it is almost certain that there will be an election to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom later this year, it is important to understand which candidates are currently planning to run against him.

The candidate which has received the most attention so far is reality TV star and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner. She is a lifelong Republican and is running on a socially liberal and economically conservative platform that in her words aims to restore California as the center of the American Dream.

Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer is another Republican running on a socially liberal and fiscally conservative platform. In his campaign, he is aiming to “restore California’s promise of liberty, equality, and opportunity.”

The third prominent candidate in the mix is Republican real-estate millionaire John Cox. Cox initially ran for governor in the 2018 election, where he lost to Newsom by a historic margin, but is back again with promises to cut taxes and be a “beastly” presence in Sacramento.

Former Rep. Doug Ose is the final frontrunner at the moment. The Republican candidate aims to work across party lines to reopen schools across the state and begin tackling the homelessness problem.

There are more candidates in the mix than the ones listed here – and more people expected to announce their candidacy – but these four are the current frontrunners. It is unclear if any prominent Democrats will enter the race. There are some who have looked into announcing a campaign, but for now, the party is attempting to prevent Newsom from getting recalled in the first place by maintaining a united front.
